A healing technique which claims to improve conditions including asthma, cerebral palsy, depression, infertility and rheumatism by balancing energy flow in the body is running its first London-based workshops in Roehampton.
The capital's first students of Bi-Aura Therapy have almost completed a nine-month, part-time diploma course at the Kairos Centre in Mount Angelus Road, Roehampton.
Dan Kahn, 34, from Wandsworth Common Northside, has been training for his diploma in Bi-Aura Therapy for eight months.
"One of my clients, who has diabetes, has seen her blood sugar levels drop considerably after four sessions and feels much more energised," he says.
"Another woman had a swelling caused by a broken ankle which had not healed after six months. Within four weeks the swelling had gone down and she also found she felt much better in herself.
"We regard Bi-Aura as an extension of conventional medicine and want to work alongside it."
"I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping people and getting their positive feedback," he adds
Maire Dennhofer, Bi-Aura co-ordinator for the UK, stresses the therapy is not a miracle cure.
"Bi-Aura is based on the idea that the body has seven major chakras, or energy centres, and it has had some success in treating conditions from arthritis and spinal injuries to depression," she says. "It also acts as a stress-reliever for healthy people.
"The technique is based on the principle that everything we can see and feel in the physical world around us, including the body we inhabit, is a manifestation of bio-energy, which flows in ordered patterns, the principle of which has been understood for thousands of years.
"Any blockage of energy - whether heat, water or electricity - produces a disruptive effect which can cause illness. The human body has its own electro-magnetic field, sometimes called the aura. If energy is blocked, the body does not receive the vital energy it needs to remain healthy."
Maire thinks everyone has the potential to work with this form of energy therapy.
The term bio-energy was devised from the work of psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich, who called it orgone energy.
He devised a machine, an orgone accumulator, which attracted blocked energy and came up with the system of bio-energetic massage to help people get rid of what he termed "body armour". This was practised at the Bio-energy Centre in London.
Bi-Aura practitioners also claim to be able to release blockages in energy flow. To restore the flow they use their heightened sensitivity to work on the patient's energy field (aura) without touching or using any oils or special equipment.
People who have received the treatment speak of results ranging from a sense of peace and wellbeing to the relief of chronic pain.
David Chapman, 32, who works in Streatham, found the therapy very helpful after he had an accident.
"I had headaches, muscular and back problems after a biking accident and found this therapy most beneficial," he explains.
"It is non-invasive and I felt a positive difference straight away when my energy started moving. It is excellent for people who have physical problems rooted in an emotional cause which is preventing healing."
Bi-Aura Energy Therapy is supported by physician Dr Mark Atkinson, vice-president of the Complementary Medical Association.
"Bi-Aura Therapy represents the most powerful, exciting and clinically effective energy healing therapy that I have witnessed," he says.
Journalist Lesley Gibson, 34, is also training to learn the art of Bi-Aura Therapy.
"I had been healing people for years instinctively. I decided to train after I had a demonstration session in which I felt negative energy being pulled from my sore arms," she says.
"One client, Sarah Hartley, had constant jaw pain which cleared up completely after three treatments."
Lesley, who also helped two young men with arthritis, explains that training takes place one weekend each month and teaches what ailments are related to each chakra - treating the cause rather than the condition.
Bi-Aura expert Michael D'Alton will be in Roehampton this Sunday and on Sunday, May 12, 2002, to explain and demonstrate the technique.
He suffered from asthma and eczema for many years before having bio-energy therapy.
"Like many people, when you're sick, you try everything. After I had the bio-energy treatment for four days in a row both my conditions vanished," he says.
Everyone is welcome to attend the workshop at The Kairos Centre, Mount Angelus Road, Roehampton. Bi-Aura also has a stand at the Festival of Mind, Body and Spirit in central London from May 4 to 6.
